Sir,

I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you that they have received a petition from the Writers serving in Her Majesty's Naval Yard at Hong Kong, praying for an increase of salary on the ground that from various causes, house-rents and cost of food-stuffs and clothing has considerably increased of late years while the low rate of exchange of the dollar affects all imported goods.

2.

My Lords request Mr Secretary Chamberlain will favour them with any information in his power, as to the correctness of the grounds on which the Writers have based

their petition.

3. I am to request that the petition which is forwarded in original, may be returned with your reply.
